Thumbs from Bayou Drive Salt Marshes

Hello everyone!
It's been too long since posting but I've been working on NINE paintings from the April Art Workshop with Deborah Paris. Since indirect painting is so new to me, these paintings are Research and Development so if I have the guts to post them at some point I will. Right now they aren't even half way done and there are many more layers of glazes to go.
But today I was bound and determined to do a couple of thumbs before the sun went down. So here they are. They are from one of the most beautiful places I've seen in Florida, Bayou Drive in Hernando Co. There are salt marshes on each side of the road. On the north side you can see a thin strip of the Gulf of Mexico in the horizon. To me they are so inspiring to make endless designs from these marshes. IF I were a fabric designer or jewelry maker I think I would move there just for the inspiration. Can you only imagine?? I wanted you to see the photos of the marshes so you have some idea of where these thumbs came from.

Happy Thumbing to you!

  1. Wow Phoebe..... those are great! Well done...er, thumbs up! Now I need to get out there and draw. Tonight starts my weekend, so I'm on my way. Good luck with your paintings. I know how you feel. I'll post mine no matter what they look like. If they are crummy, then I'll just have to get better and that will give my "audience" a baseline, right? I can't wait to see yours. Maybe we will finish around the same time. Happy painting!

  2. Thanks Bea. I'll post mine if you post yours! Hopefully we won't chase "our audience" away
:<). Most artists can identify. Have a super weekend!

  3. Hi Phoebe, thanks for posting your thumbs here today for us to see. It looks a lovely location and you have captured the feel of the place very well in your sketches. I wonder if you will be posting your paintings here, are they from the sketches you did when you were on Deborah's course?

  4. Gorgeous spot Phoebe and very nice thumbs! It looks like many of the places I used to paint when we lived in Dade City. And you are right- there is an endless source of inspiration here.

  6. Hi Caroline, yes, I will post them here along with the original thumb that goes with it. Bea was at Deborah's workshop as well so the ones she posts will be from the workshop also.

Hi and thanks Deborah. I'm so glad you encourage us to do thumbnails. The more I do them and the more I paint I can see how they are the backbone of any painting we do. The more thought process we do at the thumbs stage the better off we are at the painting stage.

Eva, you are the best!! I so enjoy painting with you and what lively conversations we have at lunch with the other artists! It's amazing how we all inspire each other to do what we love to do - PAINT.
